I wasn't looking for love,' says Richards

Denise Richards wasn't "looking for love" when she started dating Richie Sambora.

The Wild Girls star says the fling with the Bon Jovi rocker - who is the estranged husband of close friend Heather Locklear - "was the last thing" she wanted.

The 35-year-old actress told US TV show 'Entertainment Tonight': "The thing with Heather, that's been hard. You know you can't help who you fall for and that friendship, unfortunately, was done and wasn't salvageable."

Richards - who is in the process of divorcing actor husband Charlie Sheen - added: "This relationship was the last thing I was looking for. It's true when they say things happen when you least expect it.

She went on to deny she was to blame for the break-up of Sambora and Locklear's marriage, saying: "We didn't meddle in marriages and anything like that."

The actress also played down reports that had been "best friends" with 'Spin City' star Locklear.

She explained: "She wasn't my best friend. She was a close friend in the last couple of years. I hadn't known her my whole life like people are portraying this. It's been tough having people think that I'm such a crappy friend."

Richards added: "I've just got to the point where life is so short and I just want to be happy."

Denise Richards has hit back at those who claim she stole Richie Sambora from her former friend Heather Locklear.

"There are always two or three or four sides to every story," she said.

"[It's] been tough having people think that I'm such a crappy friend," the actress claimed, claiming that she and Locklear had never been "best friends", as was reported by the media.

"People have gone on [asking] 'Would you date your best friend('s husband)'?" Richards said in an interview with TV show Entertainment Tonight, aired in the US on Monday.

"You know, she wasn't my best friend. She was a close friend in the last couple of years. I hadn't known her my whole life [like] people [are] portraying this," she claimed.

But she admitted that losing her friendship with Locklear, Sambora's estranged wife, was difficult. Richards started her involvement with Bon Jovi guitarist Sambora three months after filing for divorce from actor Charlie Sheen.

"The thing with Heather, that's been hard," the 35-year-old said.

"You can't help who you fall for and that friendship, unfortunately, was done and wasn't salvageable," offered the 'Wild Things' actress.

[People] have been hurt in this situation. It's not good, but it is what it is," she said later.

"You know, the four of us were friends, so it's not just odd for her. I mean, Charlie knew Richie, but it's always the women who get the brunt of it all!"

But despite the friendship between the two celebrity couples who lived next door to each other, Richards claimed that she and Sambora didn’t hook up while they were still together with their respective spouses.

"We didn't meddle in marriages and anything like that."

And she insists she didn’t plan the situation, claiming her relationship with Sambora was "the last thing I was looking for".

"It's true when they say things happen when you least expect it."

But she claimed she didn’t care what people thought of her new relationship.

Regarding her divorce from Sheen, which became very public when she alleged in court documents that her estranged husband was abusive, a drug addict and threatened to kill her, she said: "Unfortunately the thing with Charlie and I – that was a court document that became public.

I didn't hand it to a tabloid and say: 'Here, print this.' And it's sad, and it's horrible that it's gotten to the point that it's gotten to."

It's a situation that's changed the actress, she believed.

"I was always a people pleaser and I just finally got to the point in my life after having my daughters and going through a really ugly divorce... I've just gotten to the point where life is so short and I just want to be happy."

Sheen himself has found his own happiness in the meantime. After reportedly seeking love on the internet, the 'Two-And-A-Half Men' actor showed off his new girlfriend at a Los Angeles function on the weekend.

He is involved with Brooke Wolofsky, a 28-year-old property investor, confirmed Sheen's publicist.

"They make a very happy couple," said Stan Rosenfeld.
