"They were totally together as a couple -- no doubt about it," another observer tells Us.
According to an Us Weekly source, the pair have only been a couple for two weeks. "I think they both reached out to each other when they were going through some hard times," a Richards insider tells the magazine. But a Locklear source tells the publication that's not how it went down.
"Denise called Richie and initiated everything," they say. "She aggressively went after Richie and was on a mission to be with him."
A Sambora pal tells Us: "It's simply comfort for both of them. They really understand each other."
Richards and Locklear used to be good friends, even seen together less than a year ago dining at the L.A. eatery Koi, but sources tell ET that now the friendship does not exist.
Ironically, Richards and Sambora are also connected by their estranged spouses. Locklear and Sheen appeared on the ABC show "Spin City" together and Richards even made a handful of guest appearances on the sitcom.
On Friday, Richards filed court papers against her estranged husband, and on the same day, a judge granted her a restraining order, ordering that Sheen maintain his distance from her and their two young daughters. Sheen has told ET he believes the allegations are "baseless" and a "smear campaign."
Reportedly within three weeks the court will hold a hearing to determine whether the restraining order should stand.
In February, BON JOVI guitarist Sambora split from Locklear, his wife of 11 years.
