BIKERS RALLY WITH HEART

THE CHRISTMAS TOYS IN THE SUN RUN THIS WEEKEND, WHICH CAPS FOUR DAYS OF EVENTS, BRINGS SMILES TO CHILDREN IN NEED

BY MARK ALLEN

Special to The Herald

Riding season is just beginning in South Florida. The mild fall and winter weather in South Florida is ideal for motorcyclists. Two-wheeled machines are rolling every weekend now as bikers head for destinations across the state.

So what better time for the South Florida President's Council to host its annual ride? The 17th annual SFPC Christmas Toys in the Sun Run is the world's longest motorcycle parade and it benefits the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Foundation.

More than 30,000 motorcyclists will travel from Pompano Harness Racetrack to Markham Park in western Sunrise carrying toys for children in need. Riders donate $10 and an unwrapped toy to participate.

The ride always draws big names to the area. Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi and Motley Crue's Vince Neil will lead the 25-mile parade to the park along with other national celebrities and Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne. The ride starts at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The awesome site of bikes roaring west each year amazes thousands of adults and children who amass at various locations, including along I-595, to wave on the bikers.

Parade entrants start lining up at 7 a.m. at the racetrack on Powerline Road between Atlantic Boulevard and Cypress Creek Road. Roads will be closed as the parade travels to Atlantic Boulevard east to I-95, then south to I-595 and west to the fringe of the Everglades.

HIGHWAYS CLOSED

As the bikes are moving west, the party at the park is already starting. Park gates open at 8 a.m. Those who want to hang out with the riders and enjoy the early festivities need to get there before 10 a.m. Plan your trip carefully. Stretches of I-95 and I-595 will be closed at 10 a.m. and reopen around 1 p.m. Entry fee to the park is $10 and a new and unwrapped toy.

Join the thousands of people at Markham Park for entertainment and recreation with only $10 and a new unwrapped toy.

Live entertainment begins at noon for the more than 100,000 people expected to attend. Relax on the green, listen to the music and checkout the food court, with a selection of local and international flavors.

There is plenty to do besides feasting. Outside the gates will be thousands of motorcycles. At the bandstand inside, there will be live entertainment throughout the afternoon. You can pick-up T-shirts, bike wear, clothing and accessories from the many vendors that line the park.

The Toys in the Sun Run, presented for the first time by Rick Case Honda Cars & Cycles, concludes a series of bike events that begins today. The typically beautiful weather attracts riders from all over the country.

Other events include the Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk Motorcycle Party on Friday and Saturday. Bikers can enjoy the historic downtown bars and restaurants starting at 5 p.m.

Action runs from today through Sunday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Custom Builders Eddie Trotta, Cory Ness, Chica and Kendall Johnson will compete in the Biker's Build-Off competition while finalists in the Miss Hawaiian Tropic Pageant face off on the Hard Rock stage.

Moroso Motorsports Park will play host to racers and enthusiasts from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday. For more information on those events, visit MorosoMotorsports Park.com

Bikers can play a round of golf for half-price at the Palm Aire Country Club (pal mairegolf.com).

VIP-style packages are available for the The Fort Lauderdale Harley-Davidson Bikers Bash, which includes a host of events. The VIP packages include police-escorted rides to area hot spots and charity events that benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs. Visit bikersbash.org for more on that.

SUNRISE EXPO

Over at the the Office Depot Center in Sunrise is the Music, Cycles, Cars & Stars Expo with live indoor concerts by national recording artists all day, an indoor motorcycle show and contests sponsored by V-Twin Motorcycles Magazine and Meguires. Big Bike Riders Association of Florida will offer Motorcycle Olympics featuring biker field events, games and drill competition.

Outside NOPI Street Performance Compact Magazine, Sound Advice and Meguires host the custom car show and contests. Two free tickets are available at Rick Case Dealerships. For registration and information, visit www.Expo-04.com

This is the week to enjoy riding that is tailored for enthusiasts. Enjoy the night life that welcomes motorcyclists, show off the bike, see the hottest new motorcycles or bring the family to watch the parade.

Comment: Sad but true - Metallica. It痴 an absolute cracker!

From: Steveisgoode
Comment: Yes all riffs mentioned here are good and easily recognisable. However there is one universal riff that has been completely overlooked: the 1955 classic riff Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry. His style and influence moved guitar melody to lead guitar and hence that is how it got its name. That one riff can still be heard in various forms 50 years later in almost any rock riff. Legends such as Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Angus Young, etc all say how they were influenced by the one and only Chuck Berry. A true legend!!!!

From: Lissa
Comment: Disappointed to see Jimi Hendrix "Voodoo Chile" left out - that is an all time favourite opening riff.

From: Nicholas
Comment: The best riff would be The Distance by Cake.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Jovi Fan
Comment: I would have to say Wanted Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi - Richie Sambora is majorly underrated as a guitarist!

From: Chika
Comment: "Wild Thing"...I can think of at least 5 bands that have ripped this riff of one way or another.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Melissa
Comment: So many to choose from but my favourites are ones where you get tingles up your spine from the pureness of the riff. So they would be: "Alive" by Pearl Jam, "Layla" original version by Eric Clapton & Cream, "Misty Mountain Hop" by Led Zeppelin, anything by Santana or Howlin' Wolf

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Nick
Comment: Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones. The Stones are the greatest and in part, it was due to developing the unique & brilliant opening riff to Satisfaction. Long may they reign.

From: Penny
Comment: Start Me Up - Rolling Stones

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Neil
Comment: "More than a feeling" from Boston has some easily recognisable guitar work.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Marty
Comment: Most riffs by Midnight Oil, such as US Forces, Kosciusko, Short Memory, you would know from the first few bars.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: John
Comment: How could Clapton's Layla not make the top 10 never mind the number one spot. It's far more inspired than the basic 3 chords of Smoke on the water.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Ben
Comment: Sweet Child should be number 1 - greatest solo ever recorded by FAR. Last month UK did a similar poll and this was Number 1. Smoke is classic riff, Metallica One is one of the greatest and the White Stripes should not be here at all.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Bob
Comment: I know this is very premature considering the song only just came out in the last couple of months, but I think Franz Ferdinand's 'Take me out' has the best riff. You know that catchy song you hear on the radio once a day? Oohhhhhh Yeaaahhhhhh!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Glenn
Comment: Black Sabbath: Paranoid, Nativity in Black Pantera: Walk Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Chile.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: snapperheadman
Comment: the best riff is without a doubt played by Eddie Van Halen of VAN Halen and the song is Panama

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Kon
Comment: I'd say the best of all time would have to be Jumpin'Jack Flash by the Stones. This, I beleive paved the way for riffs like smoke on the water and all the bands of this era. Also definitely best lyrics also, 'I was born in a crossfire hurricane'. Rolling Stones

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Katherine
Comment: I believe the opening riff to Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart" should receive a special mention. It remains one of the most recognisable introductions to a song and people only have to hear the first 10 chords to visibly wince in pain at the sound. (Personally I loved the song when it was released and still do - its upbeat melody and nonsensical lyrics always make me smile). Thank you

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Stupot
Comment: Riff Raff by ACDC..underrated
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Gary
Comment: The top 10 is quite good, but there seem to be a lack of Queen songs. My top 10 in no particular order would be: 1. You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC 2. Everlong - Foo Fighters 3. We Will Rock You - Queen 4. My Sharona - The Knack 5. Evie - Stevie Wright 6. Live and Let Die - Wings/Guns'n'Roses 7. I Want it All - Queen 8. No One Knows - Queens of the Stoneage 9. Better - Screaming Jets 10.Seven Nation Army - White Stripes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Dan
Comment: Smells like teen spirit

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: alex
Comment: Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes - the best, definitely

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Pat
Comment: Jet in fact attribute their primary influence to The Who, particularly Pete Townshend. The first 7 guitar chords of the Overture from Tommy must surely rank - it is those chords which are the building blocks for the entire work. Following that riff, even though it is synth, not a guitar, the opening of "Won't Get Fooled Again" is immediately recognisable. And of course, there's always "Stairway to Heaven"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: stephen
Comment: Re: 'Stairway to Heaven' - it isn't even a riff! It is a melody! Led Zeppelin's 'Moby Dick' has the greatest riff of all time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Mark
Comment: Anything from Joe Satriani. Or, Route 66 from Johnny Winter. Of course, most punters these days won't know much of either.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Paul
Comment: Smoke on the Water is the best. Second best would be Perfect Strangers by Deep Purple

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Peta
Comment: Freak, silverchair!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Heath Ewinger
Comment: Without doubt, Pearl Jam's Alive. Every one of us can remember that moment, circa 1990, driving in the car with the windows down - when those first few chords burst out of nowhere. A crowd pleaser then, and almost 15 years later.

Comment: Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits

Comment: 'Rain' by Dragon for fast tight guitar work that gets any crowd on the boil!

From: Chris

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Russell
Comment: No credible riff poll would be comlpete without Dire Strait's 'Money for Nothing'

From: bill
Comment: the sax riff in Madness's "Baggy Trousers". Check out the video with El Thommo flying round in the air while playing.

From: john
Comment: SMOKE ON THE WATER ??? BLECH! Whatever taste these people have must be all in their mouths. At the outset, I'd like to state that I am definitely not a metalhead. However, Metallica are exponents of tremendous musicianship and songwriting skills. Deep Purple are exponents of sludge. Unforgiven 1&2, Sandman, Sanitarium....the list goes on for eclectic guitar and percussion craftsmanship. This band was not a one hit wonder. where is Stevie Ray Vaughan on this list?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Rick
Comment: Sweet chold o mine is the best riff ever but KISS has to be the greatest band ever to grace the earth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Bon
Comment: Hells Bells - what else!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Shin M.
Comment: Led Zeppelin - Black Dog. Defined a decade, and a band on top of the world living in excess all the way baby!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Dave
Comment: One of my favourite riffs of all time that I was surprised to see missing would have to be Eric Clapton's Layla,One of the best intro builds to a song ever. The other would be Pink Floyds Wish you Were Here intro it's fantastic. The one's that made the top ten should all be there, good to see that Led Zepp have not been forgotten, arguably the greatest Rock act of the 20th centuary.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Ross
Comment: Anything by AC/DC. The riffs are relentless and so damm catchy. They stay in your head all day long.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Max
Comment: Eric Clapton's original version of Leila

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Peter
Comment: Stairway to Heaven : Lead Zep.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Gavin
Comment: No Sleep Till Brooklin Beastie Boys

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Dale
Comment: From the most innovative band in modern day rock, Radiohead's 1992 release "Creep", although not their most creative song, is definately one of the most memorable rock anthems of all time and a favourite amongst millions of diehard fans.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: luke
Comment: How could Voodoo Chile(slight Return) not get a gernsey? As soon as a Wah pedal is plugged in, 9 times out of ten Jimi's famed guitar wailing riff is belted out. I'm also not sure about "The White Stripes" being placed higher than "Stariway to Heaven"....ask any music store employee which they hear more often....Anyway the 300 polled should havebeen 300 000 to gain any credibility.
